  30. Universal Serial Bus (USB) is a specification for a serial bus
  31. subsystem which offers higher speeds and more features than the
  32. traditional PC serial port. The bus supplies power to peripherals
  33. and allows for hot swapping. Up to 127 USB peripherals can be
  34. connected to a single USB host in a tree structure.
  35. The USB host is the root of the tree, the peripherals are the
  36. leaves and the inner nodes are special USB devices called hubs.
  37. Most PCs now have USB host ports, used to connect peripherals
  38. such as scanners, keyboards, mice, modems, cameras, disks,
  39. flash memory, network links, and printers to the PC.
  40. Say Y here if your computer has a host-side USB port and you want
  41. to use USB devices. You then need to say Y to at least one of the
  42. Host Controller Driver (HCD) options below. Choose a USB 1.1
  43. controller, such as "UHCI HCD support" or "OHCI HCD support",
  44. and "EHCI HCD (USB 2.0) support" except for older systems that
  45. do not have USB 2.0 support. It doesn't normally hurt to select
  46. them all if you are not certain.
  47. If your system has a device-side USB port, used in the peripheral
  48. side of the USB protocol, see the "USB Gadget" framework instead.
  49. After choosing your HCD, then select drivers for the USB peripherals
  50. you'll be using. You may want to check out the information provided
  51. in <file:Documentation/usb/> and especially the links given in
  52. <file:Documentation/usb/usb-help.txt>.

  61. accessing the USB hardware in the PC (which is also called the USB

  64. with Intel PCI chipsets (like intel 430TX, 440FX, 440LX, 440BX,
  65. i810, i820) conform to this standard. Also all VIA PCI chipsets

  78. The Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) is a standard for accessing
  79. USB 1.1 host controller hardware. It does more in hardware than Intel's
  80. UHCI specification. If your USB host controller follows the OHCI spec,
  81. say Y. On most non-x86 systems, and on x86 hardware that's not using a
  82. USB controller from Intel or VIA, this is appropriate. If your host
  83. controller doesn't use PCI, this is probably appropriate. For a PCI
  84. based system where you're not sure, the "lspci -v" entry will list the
  85. right "prog-if" for your USB controller(s): EHCI, OHCI, or UHCI.

  119. The Enhanced Host Controller Interface (EHCI) is standard for USB 2.0
  120. "high speed" (480 Mbit/sec, 60 Mbyte/sec) host controller hardware.
  121. If your USB host controller supports USB 2.0, you will likely want to
  122. configure this Host Controller Driver. At the time of this writing,
  123. the primary implementation of EHCI is a chip from NEC, widely available
  124. in add-on PCI cards, but implementations are in the works from other
  125. vendors including Intel and Philips. Motherboard support is appearing.
  126. EHCI controllers are packaged with "companion" host controllers (OHCI
  127. or UHCI) to handle USB 1.1 devices connected to root hub ports. Ports
  128. will connect to EHCI if the device is high speed, otherwise they
  129. connect to a companion controller. If you configure EHCI, you should
  130. probably configure the OHCI (for NEC and some other vendors) USB Host
  131. Controller Driver or UHCI (for Via motherboards) Host Controller
  132. Driver too.
