  29. <a href="http://www.uclibc.org">uClibc</a> (aka µClibc/pronounced yew-see-lib-see)
  30. is a C library for embedded Linux systems. It is much smaller then the
  31. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/libc.html">GNU C Library</a>, but
  32. nearly all applications supported by glibc also work perfectly with uClibc.
  33. Porting applications from glibc to uClibc typically involves just recompiling
  34. the source code. uClibc supports standard Linux architectures (such as x86,
  35. strongArm, and powerpc), and also supports
  36. <a href="http://www.uclinux.org">MMU-less (also known as µClinux)</a>
  37. architectures such as the Coldfire, Dragonball, and ARM7TDMI micro-controllers.
  38. If you are building an embedded Linux system and you find that glibc is
  39. eating up too much space, you should consider using uClibc. If you are
  40. building a huge fileserver with 12 Terabytes of storage, then using
  41. glibc may be a better choice...
  42. <p>
  43. <p>
  44. uClibc is maintained by
  45. <a href="http://www.codepoet.org/andersen/erik/erik.html">Erik Andersen</a>
  46. and is licensed under the
  47. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/lgpl.html">GNU LIBRARY GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE</a>
  48. . This license allows you to make closed source commercial applications using
  49. uClibc (Please consider sharing some of the money you make ;-). You do not need
  50. to give away all your source code just because you use uClibc and/or run on Linux.

  95. <li> <b>4 February 2002, uClibc 0.9.9 Released!</b>
  96. <br>
  97. CodePoet Consulting is pleased to announce the immediate
  98. availability of uClibc 0.9.9. With this release,
  99. <a href="uClibc-apps.html">just about
  100. everything we have tested now compiles and runs</a>. In fact,
  101. there are now so many programs on the working application list that
  102. rather than continue to add to this list, from now on we
  103. will only be adding applications to the <em>not working list</em>. Most applications
  104. on the <em>not working list</em> either require pthreads, or require
  105. wide-character support. Work on wide-character support is
  106. well underway, and will hopefully be moving into CVS in the next week or
  107. two. Full pthreads support and rentrancy are on the TODO list
  108. and are expected to be complete in the next couple of months.
  109. <p>
  110. Another very nice change is that we can now build full GNU
  111. toolchains (binutils/gcc) that target uClibc. This brings
  112. full C++ support to uClibc. A C++ toolchain is currently being
  113. tested, and will be publicly released in the next couple of days,
  114. so stay tuned.

  120. <p>
  121. One final bit on news -- as some of you may have noticed, uclibc.org
  122. has been a bit overloaded and somewhat slow recently. The server should
  123. be getting colocated tomorrow, which will eliminate the speed problem.
  124. During the move, there may be some temporary disruption of service...

  128. <li> <b>22 December 2001, uClibc 0.9.8 Released!</b>
  129. <br>
  130. After many months of initial development, we are pleased to announce the
  131. release of uClibc 0.9.8. This release should be quite solid, and is very
  132. usable. This also, hopefully, marks a transition from a slow incubation
  133. phase to a more methodical release cycle. From now one, there should be
  134. approximately one release per month.

  202. <li> Shared library support for mmu-less systems. This is
  203. very doable (think of C++ vtables for example), but will
  204. take some work.
  205. <li> Someone (hopefully) needs to volunteer to take the
  206. <a href="http://www.linuxbase.org/test/">LSB Test Suite</a>,
  207. pull out the C library testing stuff, and convert it
  208. (perl script, by hand, I don't care how) into a form

  210. system (i.e. similar to what is currently in the uClibc
