  29. <TR><TD BGCOLOR="#eeeee0">
  30. <a href="http://www.uclibc.org">uClibc</a> (aka µClibc/pronounced
  31. yew-see-lib-see) is a C library for developing embedded Linux systems.
  32. It is much smaller than the
  33. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/libc.html">GNU C Library</a>,
  34. but nearly all applications supported by glibc also work perfectly with
  35. uClibc. Porting applications from glibc to uClibc typically involves
  36. just recompiling the source code. uClibc even supports shared libraries
  37. and threading. It currently runs on <a href="http://kernel.org/">standard Linux</a>
  38. and <a href="http://www.uclinux.org">MMU-less (also known as µClinux)</a>
  39. systems with support for alpha, ARM, i386, i960, h8300, m68k, mips/mipsel,
  40. PowerPC, SH, SPARC, and v850 processors.
  41. <p>
  42. If you are building an embedded Linux system and you find that glibc is
  43. eating up too much space, you should consider using uClibc. If you are
  44. building a huge fileserver with 12 Terabytes of storage, than using
  45. glibc may be a better choice...
  46. <p>
  47. uClibc is maintained by
  48. <a href="http://www.codepoet.org/andersen/erik/erik.html">Erik Andersen</a>
  49. and is licensed under the
  50. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/lgpl.html">GNU LIBRARY GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE</a>
  51. . This license allows you to make closed source commercial applications using
  52. uClibc (Please consider sharing some of the money you make ;-). You do not need
  53. to give away all your source code just because you use uClibc and/or run on Linux.
  54. <p>
  55. <h3>Mailing List Information</h3>
  56. uClibc has a <a href="/lists/uclibc/">mailing list</a>.<br>

  61. Before asking questions on the uClibc mailing list,
  62. you might want to take a look at the

  65. you might want to search the mailing list archives...

  71. <h3>Working Applications List</h3>
  72. These days, pretty much everything compiles with uClibc. This
  73. is a <a href="uClibc-apps.html">list of applications</a> that are known
  74. to work just fine with uClibc. Since most applications work just
  75. fine with uClibc, we are especially interested in knowing about any
  76. applications that either <em>do not compile</em> or <em>do not work</em>
  77. properly with uClibc. Submissions are welcome!

  89. <li> <b>30 June 2003, uClibc 0.9.20 Released</b>
  90. <br>
  91. CodePoet Consulting is pleased to announce the immediate availability of
  92. uClibc 0.9.20. This is primarily a bug-fix release. This release remains
  93. binary compatible with 0.9.18 and 0.9.19 (as long as you leave the
  94. new UCLIBC_HAS_TM_EXTENSIONS option disabled), so you don't have to recompile
  95. everything if you don't really feel like it.
  96. <p>
  97. This release has many small improvements. At this point, most applications
  98. that compile and work with glibc will also compile and run with uClibc.
  99. Perl and Python even pass all the tests in their test suites.
  100. <p>
  101. There is currently one notable exception. Applications that use dlopen()
  102. to load libraries that themselves depend on other libraries, may have weak
  103. symbols within those depended-upon libraries resolved incorrectly. This
  104. problem is currently being worked on. Other than that, everything seems
  105. to now be working as expected....
  106. <p>
  107. As usual, the
  108. <a href="http://www.uclibc.org/downloads/Changelog">Changelog</a>,
  109. <a href="http://www.uclibc.org/downloads/Changelog.full">detailed changelog</a>,

  120. <a href="http://www.uclibc.org/downloads/root_fs-mipsel.bz2">mips</a>,
  121. have been updated to uClibc 0.9.20. Several problems have been fixed up,
  122. gcc has been updated to version 3.3, and Perl 5.8.0 is now included.
  123. <p>
  124. This is a 150 MB ext2 filesystem that runs natively on the specified
  125. architecture. It contains all the development software you need to build
  126. your own uClibc applications, including bash, coreutils, findutils,
  127. diffutils, patch, sed, ed, flex, bison, file, gawk, tar, grep gdb, strace,
  128. make, gcc, g++, autoconf, automake, ncurses, zlib, openssl, openssh perl,
  129. and more. And of course, everything is dynamically linked against uClibc. By
  130. using a uClibc only system, you can avoid all the painful
  131. cross-configuration problems that have made using uClibc somewhat painful
  132. in the past. If you want to quickly get started with testing or using
  133. uClibc you should give these images a try. You can loop mount and then
  134. chroot into them, you can boot into them using user-mode Linux, and you can
  135. even 'dd' them to a spare partition and use resize2fs to make them fill the
  136. drive. Whatever works for you.
  137. <p> If you would like to build your own custom uClibc system, you can
  138. use <a href="/cgi-bin/cvsweb/buildroot/">buildroot</a>, which is
  139. how the uClibc development systems were created.
