  29. <a href="http://www.uclibc.org">uClibc</a> (aka µClibc/pronounced
  30. yew-see-lib-see) is a C library for developing embedded Linux systems.
  31. It is much smaller than the
  32. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/libc.html">GNU C Library</a>,
  33. but nearly all applications supported by glibc also work perfectly with
  34. uClibc. Porting applications from glibc to uClibc typically involves
  35. just recompiling the source code. uClibc even supports shared libraries
  36. and threading. It currently runs on <a href="http://kernel.org/">standard Linux</a>
  37. and <a href="http://www.uclinux.org">MMU-less (also known as µClinux)</a>
  38. systems with support for alpha, ARM, i386, i960, h8300, m68k, mips/mipsel,
  39. PowerPC, SH, SPARC, and v850 processors.
  40. <p>
  41. If you are building an embedded Linux system and you find that glibc is
  42. eating up too much space, you should consider using uClibc. If you are
  43. building a huge fileserver with 12 Terabytes of storage, than using
  44. glibc may be a better choice...
  45. <p>
  46. uClibc is maintained by
  47. <a href="http://www.codepoet.org/andersen/erik/erik.html">Erik Andersen</a>

  50. . This license allows you to make closed source commercial applications using
  51. uClibc (Please consider sharing some of the money you make ;-). You do not need
  52. to give away all your source code just because you use uClibc and/or run on Linux.

  63. <h3>Working Applications List</h3>
  64. These days, pretty much everything compiles with uClibc. This
  65. is a <a href="uClibc-apps.html">list of applications</a> that are known
  66. to work just fine with uClibc. Since most applications work just
  67. fine with uClibc, we are especially interested in knowing about any
  68. applications that either <em>do not compile</em> or <em>do not work</em>
  69. properly with uClibc. Submissions are welcome!

  80. <li> <b>11 July 2002, Native uClibc toolchains updated</b>
  81. <br>
  82. CodePoet Consulting (i.e. Erik) has released updated native
  83. uClibc/gcc-3.1 and uClibc/gcc-2.95 toolchains. These toolchains
  84. build real gcc cross compilers (i.e. not just a wrapper) and create
  85. executables linked vs uClibc. These toolchains have been tested
  86. and found working on x86, arm, and mmu-less arm. They should work
  87. (at least in theory!) for all architectures supported by uClibc.
  88. <p>
  89. These toolchains should make it easy to anyone to build uClibc based
  90. applications. <a href="downloads/toolchain/">Source code can be downloaded here</a>.
  91. Be aware that much of the needed source code will actually be downloaded on
  92. demand when you compile things. To build the toolchain, simply
  93. grab the source, edit the Makefile to select where you would like
  94. the toolchain installed, run 'make', and then go watch TV, eat
  95. dinner, or visit with your friends while it compiles. It takes
  96. about 15 minutes for Erik to compile the gcc-3.1 toolchain (w/C++ support)
  97. on his Athlon XP 1600 (not counting the time it takes to download
  98. source code). Your results may vary...

  100. <li> <b>20 June 2002, uClibc 0.9.12 Released</b>
  101. <br>
  102. CodePoet Consulting is pleased to announce the immediate availability of
  103. uClibc 0.9.12. This release adds an i960 port, an initial alpha port,
  104. fully working mips shared library support, shared library support fixes
  105. for on powerpc, and many other improvements. One very exciting new feature
  106. is nearly complete locale support, thanks to a lot of hard work by Manuel
  107. Novoa III. uClibc's locale support is <em>much</em> smaller than glibc's,
  108. though it is also slightly less flexible. This release was delayed by a
  109. month due to the arrival of a new baby at Erik's house. For those that
  110. have been anxiously waiting, this release should certainly be worth the
  111. wait. Have fun!
  112. <p>
  113. The <a href="downloads/Changelog">Changelog</a>
  114. and <a href="downloads/uClibc-0.9.12.tar.bz2">source code</a>
  115. for this release are available <a href="downloads/">here</a>.
  116. <li> <b>28 May 2002, Native uClibc/gcc-3.1 toolchain</b>
  117. <br>
  118. CodePoet Consulting has released source code and a Makefile to build a
  119. gcc-3.1 toolchain that natively targets uClibc. Additionally, the
  120. gcc-3.0.4 and gcc-2.95 toolchains have also been updated. These toolchains
  121. make it easy to build uClibc based applications. Source code can be
  122. downloaded <a href="downloads/toolchain/">here</a> and is now much smaller,
  123. since much of the needed binutils and gcc source code is now downloaded on
  124. demand. To build the toolchain, simply grab the source, edit the Makefile
  125. to select where you would like the toolchain installed, and then run 'make'
  126. and wait for it to compile.

  128. <p><li> <b>10 April 2002, uClibc 0.9.11 Released</b>
  129. <br>
  130. CodePoet Consulting is pleased to announce the immediate availability of
  131. uClibc 0.9.11. This release is primarily focused on fixing the issues that
  132. have turned up since the last release. Several bugs in the gcc wrapper
  133. have been fixed, allowing applications such as iproute2 and XFree86 to link properly.
  134. Large file support has been improved, and a thread locking bug was
  135. fixed that could cause s*printf calls to deadlock when threading was
  136. enabled. Several bugs were also fixed with the powerpc, h8300, m68k,
  137. sparc, and mips architecture support. Many additional applications now
  138. compile and run perfectly and have been added to the <a
  139. href="uClibc-apps.html">working applications list</a> .
  140. <p>

  142. and <a href="downloads/uClibc-0.9.11.tar.bz2">source code</a>
