  29. <TR><TD BGCOLOR="#eeeee0">
  30. <a href="http://www.uclibc.org">uClibc</a> (aka µClibc/pronounced
  31. yew-see-lib-see) is a C library for developing embedded Linux systems.
  32. It is much smaller than the
  33. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/libc.html">GNU C Library</a>,
  34. but nearly all applications supported by glibc also work perfectly with
  35. uClibc. Porting applications from glibc to uClibc typically involves
  36. just recompiling the source code. uClibc even supports shared libraries
  37. and threading. It currently runs on <a href="http://kernel.org/">standard Linux</a>
  38. and <a href="http://www.uclinux.org">MMU-less (also known as µClinux)</a>
  39. systems with support for alpha, ARM, cris, i386, i960, h8300, m68k, mips/mipsel,
  40. PowerPC, SH, SPARC, and v850 processors.
  41. <p>
  42. If you are building an embedded Linux system and you find that
  43. glibc is eating up too much space, you should consider using
  44. uClibc. If you are building a huge fileserver with 12 Terabytes
  45. of storage, then using glibc may make more sense. Unless, for
  46. example, that 12 Terabytes will be Network Attached Storage and
  47. you plan to burn Linux into the system's firmware...
  48. <p>
  49. uClibc is maintained by
  50. <a href="http://www.codepoet.org/andersen/erik/erik.html">Erik Andersen</a>
  51. and is licensed under the
  52. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/lgpl.html">GNU LIBRARY GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE</a>
  53. . This license allows you to make closed source commercial applications using
  54. uClibc (Please consider sharing some of the money you make ;-). You do not need
  55. to give away all your source code just because you use uClibc and/or run on Linux.
  56. <p>

  58. uClibc has a <a href="/lists/uclibc/">mailing list</a>.<br>

  73. <h3>Working Applications List</h3>
  74. These days, pretty much everything compiles with uClibc. This
  75. is a <a href="uClibc-apps.html">list of applications</a> that are known
  76. to work just fine with uClibc. Since most applications work just
  77. fine with uClibc, we are especially interested in knowing about any
  78. applications that either <em>do not compile</em> or <em>do not work</em>
  79. properly with uClibc. Submissions are welcome!

  91. <li> <b>13 November 2003, uClibc 0.9.23 Released</b>
  92. <br>
  93. CodePoet Consulting is pleased to announce the immediate availability of
  94. uClibc 0.9.23. Of course, we are somewhat less than pleased that there
  95. were configuration problems in the previous release that made such it
  96. necessary to release .23 so quickly. Updated uClibc development systems
  97. using uClibc 0.9.23 are being built and will be posted shortly. And Erik
  98. has built Debian stable (woody) for x86 with uClibc and it runs great.
  99. <p>
  100. This release continues to be binary compatible with uClibc 0.9.21 and
  101. 0.9.22 -- as long as you pick compatible configuration options. Enabling
  102. or disabling things like soft-float, locale, wide char support, or changing
  103. cpu optimizations are all good examples of binary incompatible
  104. configuration options. If have changed any of those sorts of options (or
  105. if you are not sure!) you will need to recompile all your applications and
  106. libraries.

  116. <br>
  117. CodePoet Consulting is pleased to announce the immediate availability of
  118. uClibc 0.9.22. This release has been cooking for a couple of months now
  119. and is looking quite solid. We have done quite a lot of testing with this
  120. release and things are looking good. And Erik has built Debian stable
  121. (woody) for x86 with uClibc and it runs great. Expect that to be released
  122. in the next few days.
  123. <p>
  124. This release is binary compatible with uClibc 0.9.21 -- as long as you pick
  125. compatible configuration options. Enabling or disabling things like
  126. soft-float, locale, wide char support, or changing cpu optimizations are
  127. all good examples of binary incompatible configuration options. If have
  128. changed any of those sorts of options (or if you are not sure!) you will
  129. need to recompile all your applications and libraries.
  130. <p>
  131. Updated uClibc development systems using uClibc 0.9.22 will be made
  132. available within a few days. Meanwhile, we invite you to try out uClibc
  133. with the latest <a href="http://ltp.sourceforge.net/">Linux Test Project
  134. test suite</a> (you will need to apply a small <a
  135. href="http://www.uclibc.org/cgi-bin/cvsweb/buildroot/sources/ltp-testsuite.patch?rev=1.3">patch</a>.
  136. And also give the latest Perl and Python test suites a try as well.
  137. If you find any bugs in uClibc, PLEASE let us know!

  149. <a href="http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/uclibc/root_fs_i386.bz2">i386</a>,
  150. <a href="http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/uclibc/root_fs_powerpc.bz2">powerpc</a>,
  151. <a href="http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/uclibc/root_fs_arm.bz2">arm</a>,
  152. <a href="http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/libs/uclibc/root_fs_mipsel.bz2">mips</a>,
  153. have been updated to uClibc 0.9.21 (plus all the CVS updates up to
  154. today). Several problems have been fixed up,
  155. gcc has been updated to version 3.3.1, binutils was updated to 2.14.90.0.6, and
  156. <em>tada</em> everything finally works for cross compiling. These were
  157. all cross compiled (which really makes things faster since the older
  158. mipsel releases used to take 2 days to build!)
  159. <p>
  160. These are ~100 MB ext2 filesystems that run natively on the specified
  161. architecture. They contains all the development software you need to build
  162. your own uClibc applications, including bash, coreutils, findutils,
  163. diffutils, patch, sed, ed, flex, bison, file, gawk, tar, grep gdb, strace,
  164. make, gcc, g++, autoconf, automake, ncurses, zlib, openssl, openssh perl,
  165. and more. And of course, everything is dynamically linked against uClibc.
  166. By using a uClibc only system, you can avoid all the painful
  167. cross-configuration problems that have made using uClibc somewhat painful
  168. in the past. If you want to quickly get started with testing or using
  169. uClibc you should give these images a try. You can loop mount and them
  170. you can chroot into them, you can boot into with using user-mode Linux,
  171. and you can even 'dd' them to a spare partition and use resize2fs to make
  172. them fill the drive. Whatever works for you.
  173. <p> If you would like to build your own custom uClibc system, you can
  174. use <a href="/cgi-bin/cvsweb/buildroot/">buildroot</a>, which is
  175. how these uClibc development systems were created.
