  29. <a href="http://uclibc.org">uClibc</a> (aka µClibc/pronounced yew-see-lib-see)
  30. is a C library for embedded Linux systems. It is much smaller then the
  31. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/libc.html">GNU C Library</a>, but
  32. nearly all applications supported by glibc also work perfectly with uClibc.
  33. Porting applications from glibc to uClibc typically involves just recompiling
  34. the source code. uClibc supports standard Linux systems (such as x86,
  35. strongArm, and powerpc), and also supports
  36. <a href="http://www.uclinux.org">MMU-less (also known as µClinux)</a> systems,
  37. such as those based on the Coldfire, dragonball, or arm7tdmi micro-controllers.
  38. If you are building an embedded Linux system and you find that glibc is
  39. eating up too much space, you should consider using uClibc instead. If you are
  40. building an ultra fast fileserver with 12 Terabytes of storage, then you probably
  41. want to use glibc...
  42. <p>
  43. <p>
  44. uClibc is maintained by
  45. <a href="http://www.codepoet.org/andersen/erik/erik.html">Erik Andersen</a>
  46. and is licensed under the
  47. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/lgpl.html">GNU LIBRARY GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE</a>
  48. . This license allows you to make closed source commercial applications using
  49. uClibc (Please consider sharing some of the money you make ;-). You do not need
  50. to give away all your source code just because you use uClibc and/or run on Linux.

  97. After many months of initial development, we are pleased to announce the
  98. release of uClibc 0.9.8. This release should be quite solid, and is very
  99. usable. This also, hopefully, marks a transition from a slow incubation
  100. phase to a more methodical release cycle. From now one, there should be
  101. approximately one release per month.

  165. Here are a few things on the TODO list:
  166. <ul>
  167. <li> Shared library support for all supported architectures.
  168. We now have our own ld.so, but it needs to be ported to
  169. support each architecture.
  170. <li> Shared library support for mmu-less systems. This is
  171. very doable (think of C++ vtables for example), but will
  172. take some work.
  173. <li> Someone (hopefully) needs to volunteer to take the
  174. <a href="http://www.linuxbase.org/test/">LSB Test Suite</a>,
  175. pull out the C library testing stuff, and convert it
  176. (perl script, by hand, I don't care how) into a form
  177. that is usable without having it take over your entire
  178. system (i.e. similar to what is currently in the uClibc
  179. test suite). This will be <em>enormously</em> helpful!
  180. <li> other things as I think of them.
