  29. <a href="http://www.uclibc.org">uClibc</a> (aka µClibc/pronounced
  30. yew-see-lib-see) is a C library for developing embedded Linux systems.
  31. It is much smaller then the
  32. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/libc.html">GNU C Library</a>,
  33. but nearly all applications supported by glibc also work perfectly with
  34. uClibc. Porting applications from glibc to uClibc typically involves
  35. just recompiling the source code. uClibc even supports shared libraries
  36. and threading. It currently runs on standard Linux and
  37. <a href="http://www.uclinux.org">MMU-less (also known as µClinux)</a>
  38. systems with support for ARM, i386, h8300, m68k, mips, mipsel, PowerPC,
  39. SH, SPARC, and v850 processors.
  40. <p>
  41. If you are building an embedded Linux system and you find that glibc is
  42. eating up too much space, you should consider using uClibc. If you are
  43. building a huge fileserver with 12 Terabytes of storage, then using
  44. glibc may be a better choice...
  45. <p>
  46. uClibc is maintained by
  47. <a href="http://www.codepoet.org/andersen/erik/erik.html">Erik Andersen</a>
  48. and is licensed under the
  49. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/copyleft/lgpl.html">GNU LIBRARY GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE</a>
  50. . This license allows you to make closed source commercial applications using
  51. uClibc (Please consider sharing some of the money you make ;-). You do not need
  52. to give away all your source code just because you use uClibc and/or run on Linux.

  97. <li> <b>10 April 2002, uClibc 0.9.11 Released</b>
  98. <br>
  99. CodePoet Consulting is pleased to announce the immediate availability of
  100. uClibc 0.9.11. This release is primarily focused on fixing the issues that
  101. have turned up since the last release. Several bugs in the gcc wrapper
  102. have been fixed, allowing applications such as iproute2 and XFree86 to link properly.
  103. Large file support has been improved, and a thread locking bug was
  104. fixed that could cause s*printf calls to deadlock when threading was
  105. enabled. Several bugs were also fixed with the powerpc, h8300, m68k,
  106. sparc, and mips architecture support. Many additional applications now
  107. compile and run perfectly and have been added to the <a
  108. href="uClibc-apps.html">working applications list</a> .
  109. <p>
  110. The <a href="downloads/Changelog">Changelog</a>
  111. and <a href="downloads/uClibc-0.9.11.tar.bz2">source code</a>
  112. for this release are available <a href="downloads/">here</a>.
  113. <p>
  114. <li> <b>10 April 2002, Native uClibc/gcc-3.0.4 toolchain</b>
  115. <br>
  116. CodePoet Consulting has released source code and a Makefile
  117. to build a gcc-3.0.4 toolchain that natively targets uClibc.
  118. This brings with it full C++ support for uClibc, including the
  119. libstdc++ library. A gcc-2.95.x toolchain will also be released
  120. shortly, but is not yet ready. At this time, only source code and
  121. a Makefile for the native uClibc toolchain is being released (i.e.
  122. no binaries, sorry). Source code can be downloaded
  123. <a href="downloads/toolchain/">here</a>,
  124. but be aware that the source code is 27 MB.
  125. <p>
  126. To build the toolchain, simply grab the source, edit the Makefile
  127. to select where you would like the toolchain installed. Then
  128. run 'make and wait for it to compile. If you do not have a copy
  129. of uClibc already, it will download the latest daily snapshot.
  130. <p>
  131. <li> <b>21 March 2002, uClibc 0.9.10 Released!</b>
  132. <br>
  133. CodePoet Consulting is pleased to announce the immediate
  134. availability of uClibc 0.9.10. This release adds pthreads support
  135. (including pthreads support for mmu-less systems!). Additionally,
  136. thanks to Manuel Novoa III, we now have a completely new stdio
  137. library, which is small, standards compliant, supports pthreads,
  138. wide/narrow streams, large files, and can even operate in a
  139. low-memory unbuffered mode. Many, many bugs have been fixed and a
  140. number of additional applications now compile and run perfectly.
  141. Even with all these changes, uClibc continues to be very small.
  142. On x86, a default build of the uClibc C library is still just 168k.
  143. <p>
  144. To make things more interesting, the release also adds support for
  145. C++ constructors and destructors. To make it easy to use uClibc
  146. when developing C++ applications, this release also provides a
  147. wrapper for the GNU C++ compiler. Of course, for more complex C++
  148. applications, such as those using iostreams, a standard C++ library
  149. (libstdc++) is required. A native GNU toolchain (binutils/gcc) that
  150. provides libstdc++ linked with uClibc 0.9.10 will be released in the
  151. next couple of days, so stay tuned.
  152. <p>
  153. The <a href="downloads/Changelog">Changelog</a>
  154. and <a href="downloads/uClibc-0.9.10.tar.bz2">Source code</a>
  155. for this release are available <a href="downloads/">here</a>.

  158. <li> <b>4 February 2002, uClibc 0.9.9 Released!</b>
  159. <br>
  160. CodePoet Consulting is pleased to announce the immediate
  161. availability of uClibc 0.9.9. With this release,
  162. <a href="uClibc-apps.html">just about
  163. everything we have tested now compiles and runs</a>. In fact,
  164. there are now so many programs on the working application list that
  165. rather than continue to add to this list, from now on we
  166. will only be adding applications to the <em>not working list</em>. Most applications
  167. on the <em>not working list</em> either require pthreads, or require
  168. wide-character support. Work on wide-character support is
  169. well underway, and will hopefully be moving into CVS in the next week or
  170. two. Full pthreads support and rentrancy are on the TODO list
  171. and are expected to be complete in the next couple of months.
  172. <p>
  173. The <a href="downloads/Changelog">Changelog</a>
  174. and <a
  175. href="downloads/uClibc-0.9.9.tar.bz2">Source code</a>
  176. for this release are available <a href="downloads/">here</a>.
  177. <p>
  178. One final bit on news -- as some of you may have noticed, uclibc.org
  179. has been a bit overloaded and somewhat slow recently. The server should
  180. be getting colocated tomorrow, which will eliminate the speed problem.
  181. During the move, there may be some temporary disruption of service...
  182. <p>

  185. <li> <b>22 December 2001, uClibc 0.9.8 Released!</b>
  186. <br>
  187. After many months of initial development, we are pleased to announce the
  188. release of uClibc 0.9.8. This release should be quite solid, and is very
  189. usable. This also, hopefully, marks a transition from a slow incubation
  190. phase to a more methodical release cycle. From now one, there should be
  191. approximately one release per month.
  192. <p>
