  29. <a href="http://uclibc.org">uClibc</a> (aka µClibc but pronounced
  30. yew-see-lib-see) is a C library for embedded Linux systems. It is much smaller
  31. then GNU libc, but nearly all applications supported by the
  32. <a href="http://www.gnu.org/software/libc/libc.html">GNU C Library (aka glibc)</a>
  33. also work perfectly with uClibc. Porting applications from
  34. glibc to uClibc typically involves just recompiling the source code. uClibc
  35. supports standard Linux systems (such as x86, strongArm, and powerpc), and also
  36. supports <a href="http://www.uclinux.org">MMU-less (also known as µClinux)</a>
  37. systems, such as those based on the Coldfire, dragonball, or arm7tdmi
  38. micro-controllers. If you are building an embedded Linux system, and you fine
  39. the GNU libc is eating up too much space, you should consider using uClibc
  40. instead. If you are working on an older system with limited memory (such as an
  41. oldworld Mac), uClibc may also be useful for you. If you are using a standard
  42. desktop Linux workstation to develop applications for an embedded Linux system,
  43. you can use run uClibc on your workstation while doing development. If you are
  44. trying to build a ultra fast fileserver for your company that has 12 Terabytes
  45. of storage, then you probably want to use glibc...
  46. <p>
  47. <p>
  48. uClibc is maintained by
  49. <a href="http://www.codepoet.org/andersen/erik/erik.html">Erik Andersen</a>

  52. . This license allows you to make closed source commercial applications using
  53. uClibc (Please consider sharing some of the money you make ;-). You do not need
  54. to give away all your source code just because you use uClibc and/or run on Linux.

  101. After many months of initial development, we are pleased to announce the
  102. release of uClibc 0.9.8. This release should be quite solid, and is very
  103. usable. This also marks a transition from a slow incubation phase to a more

  169. Here are a few things on the TODO list:
  170. <ul>
  171. <li> Shared library support for all supported architectures.
  172. We now have our own ld.so, but it needs to be ported to
  173. support each architecture.
  174. <li> Shared library support for mmu-less systems. This is
  175. very doable (think of C++ vtables for example), but will
  176. take some work.
  177. <li> Someone (hopefully) needs to volunteer to take the
  178. <a href="http://www.linuxbase.org/test/">LSB Test Suite</a>,
  179. pull out the C library testing stuff, and convert it
  180. (perl script, by hand, I don't care how) into a form
  181. that is usable without having it take over your entire
  182. system (i.e. similar to what is currently in the uClibc
  183. test suite). This will be <em>enormously</em> helpful!
  184. <li> other things as I think of them.
